Finlay Donovan, single mum and floundering crime writer, is having a hard time. Her ex-husband went behind her back to fire the nanny, and this morning she sent her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an unfortunate incident with scissors.

I absolutely love this story and I didn’t want to put the book down. It is full of mystery, humour, romance and adventure with the main plot being original and refreshing.
Finlay is going through so much with being a mum, her divorce, seeing her ex-husband with his new fiancé who he cheated on her with, her books not selling and then having to write a new book as she already has a contract. When she meets her agent at Panera to discuss the plot of her new book she was overheard by a woman who thinks Finlay is a contract killer and from there everything changes for her.
All the characters have important roles and have personalities that perfectly fit the story. Finlay the main character is so likeable as her personality is so down to earth contrasting well to the chaotic plot. She is struggling with her writing but also with motherhood which makes her character believable. The story is just perfect and a bit crazy in a very good way. Every single aspect of the story is very well balanced.
There is a lot going on in the story but I always enjoy a book with lots going on and never felt I was losing track of what was happening. There are mobs, detectives, lawyers, the ex-husband, his fiancé, the babysitter, the nosy neighbour and more.
This book also has some very unexpected turns and it managed to surprise me with its plot twists. I definitely wasn’t expecting the end of the story and that was so refreshing.
Elle Cosimano really kill it with this book. One of my favourites reads from 2021
